First Friday Lecture features "Enhancing Bridge Performance"
Friday, April 3, 11:45am - 1:00pm; 111 Koldus;
April's First Friday Lecture, "Enhancing Bridge Performance," will be presented by Monique Hite Head, assistant professor of structural engineering in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. As assistant professor, Head has conducted reduced- and full-scale experiments to study the response of bridges subjected to lateral, dynamic, and impact loads. Lunch will be provided to registrants at 11:45 a.m. The lecture will begin at noon and end at 1:00 p.m. The broader impact of her research will help to improve the resiliency of our nation's bridge infrastructure while protecting lives during extreme events. She is also interested in exploring research in the areas of hybrid simulation of bridges for the assessment of performance-based design, multi-hazard mitigation of transportation structures to establish guidelines for new design and retrofit criteria, and structural health monitoring of bridges. Head received her bachelor's and master's of civil engineering from the University of Delaware in 2000 and 2002, respectively, and her doctorate in structural engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in May 2007.
The First Friday Lecture Series is a program of the African American Professional Organization held the first Friday of the month and is sponsored by the Division of Research and Graduate Studies. "We All Bleed the Same Blood": An art exhibition of works by Lynne Dian Gulezian
March 4 - April 13, 2009, 6:30PM; J. Wayne Stark Galleries;
. The body of work that VAC will display consists of paintings, both multi-media and oil, which depict the lives of people the artist has encountered while living part of each year in South Africa. The events of the paintings encompass the time of apartheid, the transition to a new political order, and the AIDS epidemic. The artist draws completely on memory, as opposed to using photographs. She says that memory “is relied upon as a more reliable source of emotional truth.” In addition, she says that “the stories of great difficulty and real hope” have made a lasting impression on her. She “invites the viewer to recognize their kinship with the people whose lives are represented…”
The J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries are located at the northeast corner of the Memorial Student Center on the Texas A&M University campus. Perspective 09’: Floral Art in Motion
April 23 - May 31, 2009; J. Wayne Stark Galleries;
This innovative exhibition, organized for its seventeenth consecutive year by the Stark Galleries in collaboration with Texas A&M Horticulture professor James L. Johnson, features artwork created by students of Johnson's floral design course. This year, students are creating floral-inspired kinetic artwork, a difficult medium of art which depends on motion and movement for its effect. According to Johnson, this year’s theme has pushed students to the limit, testing their artistic ability as much as their patience. “The very thought of creating ‘moving parts’ with dried flowers and leaves is pretty scary! Are we crazy?” he mused. “Can this stiff and curled up dry leaf be bent to a new purpose? Color! Color is considerably muted in natural dried material…Movement! Will the natural air currents be strong enough? Transportation! How can they get their mobile delivered from the Horticulture Building to the Stark Galleries? Will it break? What if it falls apart in the gallery? Obviously, the concepts of balance, proportion and suitability take on new meaning". The opening of the exhibition will be celebrated with a food and beverage reception on Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 pm at the Stark Galleries, where the students will present and describe their artwork.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend, and no reservations are required.
The J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries are located at the northeast corner of the Memorial Student Center on the Texas A&M University campus. Gallery hours are Tues.-Fri. 9am-8pm; Sat. & Sun. 12-6pm. Admission is free.
