Research
The faculty in the Department of Architecture conduct both funded and unfunded
research in a variety of topics. Research in the department should be understood
as including scientific investigation, creative expression, and scholarly work.
Areas of particular expertise and focus include sustainable architecture, energy
efficiency in buildings, evidence-based design of health facilities, architectural
computing, visualization, and facility management and operations. A more extensive
portrayal of research interests within the department is available by perusing
the faculty directory.
Many faculty members conduct research through one of the College of Architecture
Research Centers,
which share and collaborate on research issues through the College
Research and Interdisciplinary Council.
Highlights of the scholarly contributions of the faculty include editorial services
to prominent journals.
The Las Americas Research Network
is a group of institutions and individuals in North America, Central America,
and South America who conduct educational and research collaborations in the
fields of architecture, construction, landscape architecture, urban planning,
visual arts, and telecommunications.
The students and faculty of the department are undertaking the design and construction
of a photo-voltaic powered house as an entry in the U.S. Department of Energy
Solar Decathlon.
The disasters of Katrina and other hurricanes highlight that the Gulf Coast
is both an essential part of the national economy and particularly vulnerable
to the stresses of climate change and environmental degradation. The College
of Architecture maintains a clearinghouse
for research and writings by its faculty that pertain to the recovery and security
of the Gulf Coast.
Service
Devotion to the needs of the
public through service is one of the primary missions of Texas A&M University
as a land grant institution. The Department of Architecture engages in a large
number of service projects each year that typically include
conceptual explorations of design for public agencies and non-governmental
service agencies, building planning and programming for state agencies and
institutions,
and aid to disadvantaged populations.
Faculty also provide extensive service to national and international academic
and professional organizations.
