Abermaw Bay, Barmouth, Wales 1998
The complete renovation of a small, historic hotel and landscape. Work includes production of asbuilt drawings, re-design of 14 rooms, plus public rooms and gardens, specifications, and concept development for the entire project. The hotel is located within the Snowdonia National Park, overlooking the Atlantic and the Abermaw Estuary. This work will be funded in part by the Welsh Tourist Board (grant application pending).
Triangle Park Urban Design Plan 1998
Urban design master plan for 25 acre site owned by the State of Texas, located in the heart of Austin, which the State is attempting to lease for development. This project is being designed in association with Peter Calthorpe & Associeates.
Roma, Texas National Register Landmark District Master Plan, 1998
Urban design master plan for central square and surrounding buildings of this unique historic city on the Rio Grande River. The plaza and associated buildings are arranged according to the Law of the Indies layout, dating from the 18th century. Our client is the Conservation Fund, which with support from the Meadows Foundaton have restored many of the buildings surrounding the plaza.
Mercedes, Texas, Main Street Revitalization Plan, 1998
Led urban design workshops with citizens' committees focused on revitalizing the central business district of this small Rio Grande Valley city. Produced schematic design for main street district plan.
Weslaco, Texas, Main Street Revitalization Workshop, 1998
Urban design consultation with the Main Street Committee to determine list of priorities for streetscape revitalization. Continuation of previous work on Main Street Revitalization Plan.
Mid-Town on Blanco Charette, San Antonio, TX, 1998
Urban Designer member of resource team for local business district within a historic Hispanic neighborhood in downtown San Antonio. Work involved redesign of the pedestrian environment and production of a work plan for a core of Main Street volunteers. Recommendations included complete overhaul of parking within the district, residential zone protection measures, streetscape revitalization design.
Port Arthur Economic Revitalization Plan, Port Arthur, Texas , 1998
Co-led a year long downtown revitalization effort involving over 100 citizens meeting in workshop format to develop economic revitalization strategies for five renaissance areas in this oil refinery city. Areas of focus include the downtown; a new industrial district; a low income minority neighborhood; a man-made barrier island with resort potential; and a university district.
Rio Grande Valley Charettes, McAllen, Texas, 1998
Landscape Architect/Urban Designer in upcoming series of charettes to address urban design issues in five Valley communities: McAllen, Hidalgo, Pharr, Mission, and Edinburg; further charette sessions will address regional planning and implementation of regional design plan. Issues to be addressed include visual quality; identity; strengthening the unique identity of each city; planning a regional identity; resolving transportation problems; and fighting sprawl.

Urban design member of resource team for the Texas Main Street Program of the Texas Historical Commission design charette focusing on downtown revitalization strategies for this economically strong, ethnically diverse small city in the Rio Grande Valley.
Light Rail System Master Plan, Capital Metro Transit Authority, Austin, Texas, 1995 - 1997
Urban design principal on interdisciplinary design team, charged with conceptual design for proposed light rail system for Austin. Included design of 34 stations, including exploration of transit-oriented potential at each station. Full design development of four stations. (Currently shortlisted for actual design and construction of team.)
11th & 12th Streets Neighborhood Revitalization Plan, Austin, Texas , 1997
Led a series of charettes focused on revitalization of an economically depressed African-American neighborhood in downtown Austin. Special concerns included preservation of existing historically significant, though deteriorated housing stock, and reconstruction of devastated neighborhood commercial district. Exploration of potential for heritage tourism and linkages to proposed transit system.
Main Street Revitalization Plan, Fairfield, Texas, 1996
Urban design member of resource team for the Texas Main Street Program of the Texas Historical Commission design charette focusing on downtown revitalization strategies for a small East Texas Town, whose downtown was struggling to compete with a suburban Wal-Mart.
Cedar Park Community Master Plan, Cedar Park, Texas , 1995-1996
Urban design principal on design of a 900 acre new community located twenty miles northwest of Austin, in a rapidly developing high tech corridor. Design included retail, office, light industrial, multifamily, and recreational components. Work included extensive community meetings with surrounding neighborhoods, resulting in the first planned unit development in Cedar Park.
Mystic Canyon Plan, Austin, Texas, 1995
Urban design principal on design of a high tech office park outside of Austin, Texas. Large, wooded site which included extensive habitat for a rare and endangered species, project included wildlife surveys, schematic design of business incubator, office clusters, recreational facilities, hike and bike trails, and nature preserve.
Circle C Ranch Urban Design Guidelines, Austin, Texas 1995
Production of "new urbanism" design and design guidelines for a new community southwest of the city of Austin. Development area included single family, multi-family, retail, recreational, and office land uses.
Rosewood-Chalmers Public Housing Project Renovation and Neighborhood Revitalization Plan, Austin, Texas 1995
Urban design principal on multi-faceted project for the Austin Housing Authority. Work involved redesign of two housing projects, including a combination of renovation of existing housing stock and replacement. focused on reinventing the form of public housing in Austin, such as introducing owner-occupied housing, day care facilities, elder care facilities, and educational training and dormitory-style housing. This project also included production of a neighborhood master plan for an extensive area of East Austin where these projects were located, which addressed streetscape improvements, scattered-site housing, and linkages to community services and transit.
Meadowbrook Estates Revitalization Plan, Austin, Texas 1995
Urban design principal on a redesign of 1950s-era public housing project in South Austin owned by the Austin Housing Authority. This project site had become a high crime area, thus our work focused on aspects of site design which inhibited defensible space and prohibited the formation of community bonds. Redesign included division of public space into private gardens, introduction of diverse housing stock, reorientation of the manager's office, redesign of parking and streets, provision of more closely observed play areas.
Sierra Alta New Town Plan, Monterey, Mexico, 1994
Urban designer on design of a new community outside of the city of Monterey. The site was an environmentally sensitive mountainous tract adjacent to a National Park. Community design included large tract single family housing, multifamily housing, a new university campus, office development, recreational facilities, and extensive retail.
Historic Workshop District Master Plan, Sheffield, England, 1994
Urban design principal for downtown revitalization plan for this area of former silver workshops in a historic city center. The aim was to create a music and entertainment district, through the restoration of the 19th century structures, and create a series of significant open spaces and pedestrian passages.
Sixth Street Streetscape Improvements, Austin, Texas, 1992-1993
Urban design principal on design and construction of streetscape improvements for a 10 block area of downtown Austin. Improvements included new sidewalks of sandstone and limestone, new curbs and ramps, street tree plantings, lighting, benches, wayfinding. and the production of design guidelines for private development. Much of the design resulted from a year long series of charettes with local merchants.
Sixth Street National Register Historic District Master Plan, 1991 - 1992
Urban design principal for creation of a master plan for national register district which has become the entertainment district of Austin. Areas of concern included building preservation, streetscape improvements, crime management, pedestrian environment protection, signage, noise control, traffic calming, linkages with transit, setting of design standards.
Meinohama Master Plan, Fukuoka, Japan 1991
Urban designer on a large urban project on infill land in the harbor of Fukuoka. The design included many different types of housing; a marina; a large hotel; a series of outdoor and indoor markets; pedestrian walkways; and a major recreational facility which included an indoor ski slope.

Urban designer on a planning team concerned with creating a high quality pedestrian environment in an automobile-dominate shopping district in Houston. Included integration of an underground transit system; streetscape improvements; wayfinding; redesign of interstate overpasses; traffic calming measures.
