Courses Taught:

Environmental Design Communication
A large (150+ students) lecture course covering a broad spectrum of introductory discussions on design process, 20th century design theory, creativity theory and process, graphic communication, presentation techniques, introduction to computer aided design, visualization, and animation. Case studies in architecture, landscape and urban design presented.

Visual Communication
An introductory studio for "career change" graduate students to introduce the full range of architectural drawing techniques and principles, including experimentation with a range of media. Emphasis is placed upon drawing more as a means of design exploration than just for presentation. Sections of the course are devoted to freehand drawing and journals, creativity thresholds, 2D drawings, 3D drawings, model building, and rendering techniques.

Design Studio 306, 405, 600, 605
Third year, fourth year, and graduate level design studios. Emphasis is placed upon involvement in live projects within an urban context. Studios are taught from a site-based design philosophy, and also include consideration of sustainable city design theory. Students are encouraged to develop a personal design process. Emphasis placed upon refining drawing and model building skills as a means to design development. Where possible, field visits are also taken in association with project work.

Urban Design Reading Course
A short course on current urban design literature, to introduce architecture students to urban design history and theory.

Masters Degree Final Studies in Architecture, Landscape, and Urban Planning
Have served as chair or committee member on over twenty-five final design studies, all of which had an urban design focus. Approximately 3/4 have been design projects, 1/4 thesis papers.

Ph.D. Committees in Architecture, Landscape, and Urban Planning
Have served as chair or committee member on several dissertation committees, each concerned with urban design studies, most include an exploration of naturalistic inquiry as a research methodology.

Graduate Landscape Design Studio
Urban design studio for first year graduate students in landscape architecture. Emphasis placed upon live projects in the city, and the development of drawing and model building skills as a means to exploring and communicating design concepts.

Architectural Design Studio, with an emphasis upon urban design and housing.

History of Modern Architecture
Survey course focusing on urban and architectural theory in late 19th & 20th centuries.
