The Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson, Texas recently
opened a new 30,490 sq.ft women’s facility costing nearly $10,500,000
in the spring of 2006. The new medical center quickly gained positive
recognition around Brazoria County, and was even compared to the medical
facilities
found in Houston. Designed by WHR architects, the new women’s medical
center includes two floors containing Mammography, X-Ray, and Ultrasound
rooms,
along with ten new LDRP birthing suites. As family-centered care is a
high priority for the hospital, the new single-patient birthing suites
each include
a private bathroom, as well as convenient daytime and overnight accommodations
for family or guests. For the Brazosport Memorial Hospital this is a
major improvement and advancement in the design of the 20 year old hospital.
For
my proposal for the women’s medical center, I used a modified version
of the existing program of spaces provided by WHR architects. Having
been born and raised in Lake Jackson I feel a close connection to the community,
and my existing knowledge of the town of Lake Jackson has led me to
create an alternative, and possibly more personal design for the women’s
medical
center.
