TRC Cataloging System
For many years the TRC has used a cataloging system developed specifically for the College of Architecture. It is not the same as the Library of Congress system or the Dewey Decimal system, both of which are used by the main university library. A guide to the subject divisions in the TRC system is available in the library. Call numbers for materials cataloged in the TRC system can be located in the card catalog but not on the computer database. Searches can be done by title, author or subject. Books cataloged in the TRC system can be found on the book shelves numbered eight through ten.
Library of Congress
Currently the TRC is in the process of converting from the TRC cataloging system to the Library of Congress system. Library of Congress books may be found on rows three through six of the book stacks and at the circulation desk. Most new additions to the collection are cataloged using the Library of Congress classification system. The most recent additions to the collection can only be located through the TRC on-line catalog and will not be listed in the card catalog. Please use the computer search stations to search the TRC on-line catalog. TRC staff will be happy to assist you.

Reference Books
Many reference materials are located on the general stacks. These may be accessed easily through the card catalog or the computers. Additionally, standard reference materials such as journal indexes, architectural dictionaries and encyclopedias, and a serials directory can be found on the index table in the library.
Vertical Files
Pamphlets and loose sheets of information not suitable for shelving are kept in filing cabinets which are available to the TRC user. The Vertical File material is filed in drawers under the same headings as the TRC books are catalogued. Please ask the TRC staff to assist you in obtaining information from the vertical file.
Video and Audio Tape Collection
A collection of approximately 200 video and audio tapes are available for daily and overnight checkout and for in-library viewing. Four viewing carrels in the TRC are equipped with VCR's, color monitors, and headphones and accommodate VHS and Beta format video tapes.
Maps & Plans
The TRC has a flat file which contains site plans of the campus, working drawings, plans of various buildings and projects, county maps, and a variety of city, state & world maps. |

Periodicals
The TRC subscribes to many leading journals in the areas of architecture, urban planning, art, computer graphics, construction and landscape architecture. The periodicals are the essential core of our reference system. It follows naturally that they should be available at all times, therefore, only limited check-out (out of the library) is allowed to faculty and graduate students. Current periodicals are displayed alphabetically on the low shelves at the front of the TRC. Back issues of these and other titles are available, but some are stored separately due to a lack of space. The bound back issues can be found on rows one and two. Other back issues will be retrieved by staff upon request. Since some of the back issues cannot be openly displayed, browsing through these issues is not possible. Use of the periodical indexes is necessary. The TRC subscribes to three standard indexes to periodicals: Art Index, Architectural Index, and ArchiText Construction Index. The Art Index indexes both domestic and international architectural and art journals. Architectural Index and Construction Index, index only domestic journals. The indexes should be used in order to determine the specific volume and issue numbers needed to be pulled. |
