JAN 23

Visit the site
  • Enjoy the stroll, sharpen your perception of the environmental context: the type of vegetation, the width of trails, the number of entrances (if any), the depth of the future pond, the size of the amphitheater, the shape of the supporting buildings, the levels of the terrain, the railings along the trails, the form of existing pavilions, the sound of vehicular traffic nearby, etc.
  • Make sketches of the place where the pavilion should stand, and from there also make sketches towards interesting views (scan them)
  • Take many pictures (scan them if they are not digital).

Go back to the library and browse looking for similar projects; feed your imagination with pictures of precedents.

JAN 26

Draw rough sketches that will serve as “parti”: a top layout sketch and a profile sketch of the initial idea will give you a good start. Make as many alternatives as you can. Get a desk critic about your favorite parti.

Prepare the working terrain model (scale= 1' : 1/8")

Prepare a geometrical massing model following the selected parti option, set the model on top of your terrain. Get a desk critic about this model. Correct the model if necessary.
(scale= 1' : 1/8")

Think and decide about the material attributes of your pavilion (textures, colors, joints, etc).

JAN 28

Prepare a spatial model according with your geometric model (scale= 1' : 1/4"). You can use any of the methods suggested to create the model: stacking, cross-sectional construction, interlinking lines in space, or egg-crate surfacing.
Get a desk critic about this model. Correct the model if necessary.

JAN 30

Think and decide about the structural system that will be used: choose the material; create a hierarchical configuration of members; identify the main supporting elements, identify the supported elements.
Make the visual form of your pavilion consistent with its structural form.

FEB 2

Prepare the final model according with the inference provided by the spatial model. Prepare the final terrain model (scale= 1' : 1/4"). Set the spatial model on top of the final terrain, modify and adjust topographic lines if necessary. Get a desk critic about this model.

FEB 4

Prepare the site view drawing of the pavilion, including shadows, landscape and orientation.

Take pictures of all models. Whether you make the pictures using natural light or within the media lab, remember to get the right levels of illumination so the cast shadows enhance the perception of your pavilion.

Prepare the presentation board (s) following the presentation requirements. Don’t forget to include the narrative.
